Blanka Deskur

I design sets, costumes, and objects where space becomes part of the story. I combine drawing, light, matter, and experimentation, searching for forms that allow the expression of emotions and hidden meanings.

Space that tells a story

In set design, I am interested in a space that is not merely a background but actively participates in building the story. Through light, movement, and changes in layout, it can reveal new places, perspectives, and the emotional states of the characters.

In my projects, I use sliding walls, rotating elements, and variable structures. I seek inspiration in film, theater, literature, and architecture.

Light and matter

I treat light as a medium—it builds the atmosphere, highlights fragments of space, and leaves room for the unsaid. In the “Jaskinia” project, inspired by karst forms and Plato’s allegory, light and shadow create a symbolic tale of cognition and illusion.

I work with paper, cardboard, fabric, and clay. I develop every idea from a sketch to a physical model, which allows me to test the scale, movement, and the effect of light.

Costume as a form

I perceive the costume as a spatial structure built around the body. I am interested in its texture, rhythm, and impact on the character’s silhouette and movement.

I create both experimental objects, such as a paper costume inspired by wickerwork, as well as designs referring to historical forms. In my corset sketches, I combined belle époque fashion with motifs of butterfly wings and spider webs.

Theater of imagination

When designing sets, costumes, and marionettes, I look for forms situated between reality and imagination. I am inspired by, among others, the works of Tadeusz Kantor, the dramas of Witold Gombrowicz and Maria Pawlikowska-Jasnorzewska, and film spaces.

I am most interested in projects that do not tell the story directly, but allow the viewer to discover it gradually.
